This is very well articulated. I see people talking about this show everywhere and was wondering what felt off to me about it, because on the surface it looks like something I would enjoy. And then I realized: it's the lack of commentary, by both the characters and the creators, about both the war and Russia's anti-LGBT stance.
Even if the show's only goal was to tell a story about queer people and one of them just happened to be Russian for plot reasons, wouldn't that still warrant some kind of acknowledgment in times like these? And the country of production isn't exactly apathetic to what's going on in Ukraine. So the silence on this, I think, is a statement in itself. The only reason a lot of international audiences can't see it is that they aren't familiar with the scope at which Russian propaganda operates.
But the saddest part for me is this: "Global streaming distribution ensures wide reach, including in countries debating support for Ukraine. Emotional investment in the story can subtly shift perceptions, making harsh measures against Russia feel like punishing the 'good' Russians viewers have come to love."
