Cross I-35 and the mood shifts. Historically the city’s working-class, predominantly Black and Latino neighborhood, East Austin’s heritage still shapes its identity even as galleries and breweries move in.

What defines it:

• Street art — rotating murals along Cesar Chavez Street and beyond
• A layered food and coffee scene — generations-old taquerias alongside newer roasters
• Live music beyond the downtown bar crawl, in smaller, low-key venues
• A neighborhood in transition, where long-time residents and newcomers share the same streets

Best time: Weekend mornings for food, evenings for music and galleries.
